Criminal Defense Attorney
Rachel Mattie is the Managing Attorney of the Criminal Defense Department at The Umansky Law Firm. Born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Jacksonville, Florida, Rachel’s path to law was shaped by resilience and purpose. As a first-generation college student and the eldest of three, she grew up understanding hardship firsthand. Driven by a belief in constitutional principles and accountability, she was drawn to a career where she could advocate for others and challenge government overreach.
Rachel moved to Orlando to attend the University of Central Florida, earning her Bachelor’s degree in Legal Studies before graduating cum laude with her Juris Doctor. She began her career as a public defender in Orange County, representing hundreds of underprivileged clients who could not afford legal counsel. This experience sharpened her trial skills and deepened her commitment to justice. Her dedication ultimately led her to The Umansky Law Firm, where she has worked alongside Bill and Zahra Umansky for over nine years. Today, she leads a team of nearly 20 professionals, including eight criminal defense attorneys.
Rachel’s philosophy centers on empathy and connection. She defines success not by outcomes alone, but by ensuring her clients feel heard, supported, and genuinely cared for during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. She approaches every case with compassion, guided by the belief that meaningful advocacy begins with understanding, trust, and clear, honest communication throughout the legal process each and every single day.
Outside of the courtroom, Rachel enjoys traveling, long walks with her husband and two Australian Shepherds, and unwinding with true crime documentaries. She is also passionate about mentoring young attorneys and remains committed to strengthening both her team and the Central Florida community while preparing to welcome her first child.
