Chief of Radiation Medicine
Dr. Evan Thomas, MD, PhD, is the Chief of Radiation Medicine and founder of Renaissance, a pioneering Winter Park-based center redefining how radiation therapy is used to treat both cancer and complex non-cancer conditions. Raised in Huntsville, Alabama, Dr. Thomas developed an early fascination with biology, physics, and helping others. That passion led him from materials engineering at Arizona State University to nuclear engineering at the University of California, Berkeley, before earning both his medical degree and PhD in biomedical engineering at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. His unique blend of engineering expertise and medical training has shaped a career dedicated to advancing precision medicine.
A nationally recognized radiation oncologist and radiosurgery specialist, Dr. Thomas has spent his career at the forefront of innovation. He helped develop cutting-edge radiosurgery technologies through his work with Varian Medical Systems, served on the faculty of The Ohio State University’s James Cancer Center, and now leads Renaissance with a mission to bring the latest evidence-based treatments directly to patients. His philosophy—“Measure twice, zap once”—reflects his unwavering commitment to meticulous planning, precision, and patient-centered care.
For Dr. Thomas, success is defined not only by clinical outcomes but by helping patients achieve the goals that matter most to them. Whether treating cancer, essential tremor, cardiac arrhythmias, or other challenging conditions, he prioritizes honesty, compassion, and minimizing disruption to patients’ lives. Through Renaissance’s research institute, he is expanding access to clinical trials and exploring groundbreaking therapies, including low-dose radiation treatments for Alzheimer’s disease and osteoarthritis.
Outside the clinic, Dr. Thomas is a devoted husband and father, an accomplished Ironman triathlete, and a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast. He and his family call Central Florida home, where they enjoy travel, great food, and time together. Guided by curiosity, innovation, and service, Dr. Thomas continues to push the boundaries of what radiation medicine can achieve while helping shape the future of the field.
