Steve Maher was named the 2017 Orlando Plaintiff’s Lawyer of the Year in the area of Plaintiff’s Personal Injury law by The Best Lawyers in America. Steve has also been named to the “Top 100 Trial Lawyers” for Florida by the National Trial Lawyers Association and has been featured in Florida SuperLawyers Magazine every year since 2007. He is a member of the American Board of Trial Advocates (ABOTA) and a Fellow of the International Society of Barristers.
Steve, a native Floridian, was born in St. Petersburg and at four years of age, moved to the Orlando area in 1965. He attended Audubon Park Elementary, Winter Park Junior High and graduated from Trinity Prep in 1979. He received his undergraduate degree from Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles in 1984, and his law degree from the University of Southern California in 1987. He practiced personal injury trial law in Los Angeles from 1987 to 1991, at which time he returned home to practice law with his father, renowned trial lawyer Michael Maher.
The father and son team have practiced together for the past 25 years at The Maher Law Firm and in the process have obtained multiple record setting verdicts and settlements. The firm focuses on representing people seriously injured or killed due to the negligence of others arising from automobile accidents, medical malpractice, products liability, nursing home abuse and neglect, and defective prescription medications and medical devices. The firm is best known for its leadership role in the Florida tobacco litigation, which resulted in an $11.3 billion settlement and paved the way for ground breaking education and reforms in the field of tobacco.
Steve maintains a national practice and is admitted to practice law in eight states (California, Florida, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey) as well as the District of Columbia, and a number of Federal Courts. Steve has successfully represented clients in personal injury, products liability, fraud, and class action matters throughout the nation.
Steve is heavily involved in a number of national litigations involving injuries resulting from the use of dangerous prescription medications and medical devices. He has been appointed to leadership positions in several mass tort litigations and has served as lead trial counsel in several mass tort cases.
Steve was appointed to the Plaintiff’s Steering Committee of the Multidistrict litigation In Re: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenenone) Marketing, Sales Practices and Products Liability Litigation. The litigation was created in 2009 and at its height was declared the largest multidistrict litigation in the nation. Steve was also appointed as lead trial counsel in one of the first Actos cases to be tried. The MDL, In Re: Actos (Pioglitazone) Products Liability Litigation was resolved for approximately $2.4 billion.
