Larry D. Smith, Managing Partner of Southern Trial Counsel | PLC, epitomizes charming southern manners, sharp wit, a quick smile, and hard work. Walking through the foyer of his beautiful office past a Picasso painting and across glistening white marble floors imported from his home state of Alabama, his is a success story which began in rural Alabama. The first in his family to graduate from college, Larry now uses that drive on behalf of some of the largest corporations in the world. After graduating from the University of Alabama Law School, Larry moved to Orlando and began working with a high end firm defending companies who were sued in product liability and catastrophic injury lawsuits in courtrooms throughout the United States.
After building his former law firm into one of the top twenty five litigation firms in central Florida, Larry and his sister, Peggy, split off five years ago to buy a building during the recession and start a smaller litigation boutique firm in downtown Orlando. From their beautifully appointed offices in the Thornton Park District, Larry defends his clients in high exposure personal injury lawsuits in every major metropolitan area of the State, all three of Florida’s United States District courts, and in both the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals and United States Supreme Court.
Larry’s efforts have attracted a stable of household names as longstanding institutional clients and garnered the admiration of his peers. In addition to attaining the coveted AV-Preeminent rating by Martindale Hubbell, Larry has appeared several times among Florida Magazine’s Legal Elite, and this is his eighth consecutive year as a Florida SuperLawyer.
A staunch believer that you’re either part of the solution or you’re simply part of the problem, Larry has served on both The Florida Bar Code and Rules of Evidence Committee and the Rules of Civil Procedure Committee, helping write the rules which govern litigation in Florida.
Larry is also helping rewrite the rules about how people are treated. His office is filled with awards reflecting his longstanding commitment to professionalism, diversity and inclusion: the 2015 Sheryl J. Willert Pioneer Diversity Award, presented on behalf of the largest international membership organization of attorneys defending the interests of business in civil litigation; 2013 Henry Latimer Diversity Award, The Florida Bar’s highest recognition for diversity; and 2013 American Bar Association Section of Litigation Diversity Leadership Award. Larry continues to serve in leadership positions at the local, state and national level, advocating for a fair playing field.
As he strides into court in his Italian wool suit and Prada shoes, he has come a long way from the little house in northern Alabama with no running water, but he has not forgotten his roots. That’s real style.
