Dr. Cowin has lectured extensively in the United States, Spain, Canada, Mexico, Israel, Holland, and China and some of the papers that he has authored have been translated into many languages and have been studied by doctors around the world. You may have seen some of Dr. Cowin’s many television appearances as a medical expert on Weekend Edition, QVC, American Medicine Today, Meet the Doctors, Home Shopping Network (HSN), and “Ask Dr. Rich” or read his contribution to books such as The Doctors’ Book of Home Remedies.
When Dr. Cowin was attending podiatric medical school in his home town of Chicago, Illinois in the late 1970’s, he had the opportunity to be trained in the exciting and emerging specialty of Minimally Invasive Foot Surgery (MIFS). After receiving his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) degree from the Illinois College of Podiatric Medicine, he did a 1-year preceptorship with Surgical & Orthopedic Podiatrists, LTD, one of the nation’s leading groups that specialized in MIFS.
MIFS is a revolutionary way to correct common foot problems such as bunions, hammertoes, tailor’s bunions, heel spurs, and many other foot problems through incisions as small as 1/8 inch and requiring only a 1-stitch closure. The procedures are performed in his office operatory and the insertion of pins, wires, screws, and implants is generally not necessary. Patients are given a special post-op shoe and are able to walk right out of the office after the procedures are performed.
Dr. Cowin also specializes in Laser Foot and Ankle Surgery which is utilized to treat foot problems such as ingrown and fungal toenails, warts, porokeratosis (clogged sweat ducts), and neuromas (pinched nerves). “The word LASER, Dr. Cowin explains, “is an acronym which stands for Light Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation.” “ A surgical laser beam can cut or vaporize tissue almost instantaneously and its so precise that the surrounding tissue is hardly affected,” he added.
In addition to his podiatric surgery practice, Dr. Cowin is a “renaissance man” having received his J.D. degree from Novus Law School and his Rabbinical Semicha of Ordination from Vaad Harabanim of America. He is a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and an avid runner, having competed in most of the Disney, Track Shack, and SummerSports races.
Dr. Cowin has been happilly married to his wife, Sarai, who practices as a life coach, for 32 years. He has two grown daughters, Erica and Jenn, who are his pride and joy.
