Rumberger, Kirk & Caldwell, P.A.
Rumberger, Kirk & Caldwell consists of over 90 lawyers with offices throughout Florida and in Birmingham, Alabama. RKC’s multiple generations of litigators provide each group of young lawyers the opportunity to become the future leaders of the firm and the legal community. Darren McCartney and Kevin Gowen are two such rising stars.
Darren, a partner in the firm’s Orlando office, followed a non-traditional path to legal practice, enlisting in the United States Marine Corps directly out of high school. “Never in a million years did I think I’d be a lawyer.” said Darren. On leave between deployments with the Marines, Darren took his mom to see a lawyer about a property dispute. Seeing first hand how a lawyer can provide real-life assistance to people in trouble, Darren started down the path toward the practice of law.
After his Marine Corps service, Darren completed his undergraduate and law degrees at the University of Florida, where he graduated second in his law school class in December 2004. Darren was also the Articles Editor for the Florida Law Review.
Darren began his career with RKC as a summer clerk and continued as an associate after graduation. He concentrates his practice in commercial litigation and consumer class-action defense. Much of his practice involves claims of consumer fraud and unfair trade practices under the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act and similar statutes in other states.
Kevin Gowen is also a commercial litigator in the firm’s Orlando office. He attended college with aspirations of becoming a physician, but changed tracks after taking an elective course outside of his major. Kevin remarks, “I never would have guessed that a course in medieval Japanese history would grab my attention and lead me in this direction.” After receiving his bachelor’s degree in history from Emory University, Kevin worked in information technology before moving to Japan, where he lived for several years.
Upon returning from Japan, Kevin attended Florida State University College of Law, earning his juris doctor with a certificate in international law in 2004. While in law school, Kevin worked as an intern in the office of the special counsel for the Florida Department of State’s Office of International Affairs, was a member of the Jessup Moot Court team, and was a justice of the Student Supreme Court.
Kevin joined RKC after law school. He practices commercial litigation with a focus on creditor’s rights. Kevin dedicates his practice to enforcing financial obligations owed to his clients and defending consumer claims against them. He also draws on his technical background to advise clients regarding e-discovery and uses his knowledge of Japanese language and business to assist in the firm’s representation of its Japanese clients.
