Some celebrities have to learn the hard way that fame comes with a hefty price! That price is an increased level of scrutiny from the public eye and all over the world. If you’re not careful, you may just end up offending a foreign government and forever losing your right to step foot across their border. Surprisingly, the list of celebrities banned from foreign countries is quite a lengthy one, so this month we’ll narrow it down to the most popular country on the list—the People’s Republic of China!
In 2017, the singer-songwriter was banned indefinitely from China which prevented her from performing at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai. Her ban comes from an incident in which she donned apparel in support of Taiwanese anti-China protesters during her 2015 Prism tour.
In 2017, the Beijing Municipal Bureau of Culture spoke of Justin Bieber in a statement saying “Justin Bieber is a gifted singer, but in order to maintain order in the Chinese market and purify the Chinese performance environment, it is not suitable to bring in badly behaved entertainers.”
Pop artist Selena Gomez is rumored to have been banned from China and forced to cancel her shows when a 2-year-old picture she took with the Dalai Lama resurfaced in 2016.
Hollywood heartthrob Brad Pitt was banned from China for more than 15 years due to his role in Seven Years in Tibet, a film that the government was particularly offended by due to their pro-Tibet views.
In 2009, the Hannah Montana star was banned from entering or performing in China after she posted a racially insensitive picture of herself using her fingers to make her eyes look slanted.
Despite starring in the world’s most successful media franchise, Harrison Ford has been banned from China since 1995 because of his outspoken advocacy for a free Tibet.
