If you fall in the latter category, please allow me to be the first to welcome you to the beautiful Sunshine State! From alligators and oranges to beaches and lightning, there is never a shortage of things that come to one’s mind when they think of Florida. One thing that isn’t usually at the top of that list, however, is celebrities. Florida has produced its fair share of the rich and famous, but that’s easy to forget when Hollywood shines the light on New York and California first. Fortunately, we’re here to remind you that Mickey Mouse isn’t the only celebrity to call Florida home!
Ashley Greene, born in Jacksonville
Actress Ashley Greene was born in Jacksonville on February 21, 1987 and attended University Christian School before transferring to Wolfson High School when she was in tenth grade. As a student, Green took a commercial class and an acting class, which led her to discover a hidden passion for acting. She worked diligently to earn excellent grades and extra credits, which allowed her to graduate high school early and follow her acting dreams. At just 17-years-old, her parents allowed her to move to Los Angeles where she eventually scored her breakout role as Alice Cullen in the Twilight movie franchise.
Ariana Grande, born in Boca Raton
Television star turned pop diva Ariana Grande was born on June 26, 1993 in Boca Raton. She took to singing and acting at a young age and performed with the Fort Lauderdale Children’s Theater and various symphonies, such as the South Florida Philharmonic. She attended Pine Crest School and then North Broward Preparatory School until she was cast as Charlotte in the Broadway musical 13 and began to study with private tutors. The early role earned Grande numerous accolades and she was eventually cast in the Nickelodeon show Victorious which launched her into stardom.
Daniel Tosh, raised in Titusville
Comedian and television host Daniel Tosh was born in West Germany on May 29, 1975, but grew up in Titusville as the son of a Presbyterian minister. In 1993, Tosh graduated from Astronaut High School and enrolled in the University of Central Florida where he earned a degree in marketing. One of his first jobs was working as a telemarketer for Central Florida Research Park in 1996. However, Tosh quickly realized he wasn’t cut out for a desk job and left the area to pursue what turned into a very successful career in the entertainment industry!
Wesley Snipes, born in Orlando
The star of the Blade film trilogy was born on July 31, 1962 in beautiful Orlando, but spent most of his youth in the Bronx, New York. There he attended a performing arts high school with dreams of pursuing musical theatre. Unfortunately those dreams were put on hold when his mother moved him back to Orlando before he could graduate. After attending and graduating from Jones High School, Snipes returned to New York and attended the State University of New York at Purchase. After graduating, he successfully pursued the acting career he had always wanted.
Mandy Moore, raised in Altamonte Springs
Singer and actress Mandy Moore was born on April 10, 1984 in Nashua, New Hampshire. During her childhood, Moore’s journalist mother and pilot father relocated the family to Altamonte Springs, just outside of Orlando. Moore attended Lake Brantley High School before transferring to Catholic Bishop Moore High School. She remained a student at Bishop Moore until she scored a contract with Sony’s Epic Records label and decided that a private tutor was necessary for her touring and recording schedule.
Johnny Depp, raised in Miramar
One of Hollywood’s biggest actors was born on June 9, 1963 in Owensboro, Kentucky, but moved to Miramar when he was just 7 years old. As a teen, Johnny Depp worked in construction for extra money and built houses in West Miramar. He attended Miramar High School and formed a rock band called The Kids, which played in clubs and bars around Fort Lauderdale. In 1983, Depp dropped out of high school and left the state to pursue a career as a rock star, which eventually led to acting. Despite his huge success, Depp has been known to return to South Florida to watch and cheer on his beloved Miami Dolphins.
