Land Use & Governmental Permitting

Alison Yurko is a native of Orlando and has seen the area grow and develop, so becoming a land use lawyer was a logical choice for her. Her dad, Albert Yurko, was among the first trial lawyers in the area, coming to Orlando in the early 1960’s, and practicing here for almost 50 years. Many remember his office on Orange Avenue, a converted house where he had his practice for decades.

Having spent almost 6 years as an Assistant County Attorney for Orange County government in the early 90’s, Alison had a chance to see first hand how local government works. After that, she became a partner in a major local law firm and had an opportunity to work on many large projects for developers.

She has now been practicing law in Orlando now for 26 years and brings a wealth of experience for clients that have governmental permitting issues, land development approval needs and related issues. She has special expertise in areas such as real estate tax appeals, public utilities, code enforcement liens, impact fees, dock disputes, drainage disputes, and all zoning and related development approval issues. Like her dad, she hung her own shingle and opened an office a number of years ago. She prides herself on providing clients with a sophisticated boutique land use practice that is typically only available in large firms. Her office is in the Delaney Park area, minutes from downtown Orlando.

She has served as the Charter Review General Counsel for Orange County government, serves as the Code Enforcement Board Special Magistrate for the City of Apopka, and is the special real estate tax counsel to the Lake County Value Adjustment Board. She has written numerous widely citied articles on the topic of municipal annexation, and has lectured throughout the state on this topic and related land use topics.

Alison attended Orange County public schools, and then made her way to the University of Notre Dame, where she majored in government. She was the research assistant for Professor James J. Brown and helped edit a well known land use book series while at Stetson Law School. Alison and her husband, Tom Callan, also an attorney, are the parents of 16 year old triplets. She is active in community events and local political campaigns, and is an avid runner.

Having worked in local government, she has developed insight on how to work through governmental permitting issues. She brings a positive approach to resolving client’s issues and enjoys a balanced and successful practice.
